The decisions behind a merch order
Read these before the first quotation, because each one changes the number in that quotation.
Supplier selection constrains everything that follows. A vendor that cannot show the certification evidence for the material it ships, or that quotes a lead time it has never run, turns a simple order into a schedule problem later on. This guide sets out what to ask a supplier to show before you shortlist anyone.
The minimum order question has a simple shape. Merch is priced in tiers of 50, 100, 250, 500 and 1,000 units, and the unit cost falls as setup work spreads across more pieces. Buying above your real need is the expensive mistake, because leftover stock usually disappears long before the next season arrives.
Rush production shortens the window and raises the unit cost, so it belongs in a plan rather than in a rescue. A multi country rollout adds a second layer on top of both decisions, with a different VAT regime, a different language and a different delivery network in each market.
