Onboarding is where a merch programme has the most direct effect on how a company is perceived, because it is the first branded object a new joiner touches. The programmes here are built around a sequence rather than around a box: a welcome card on the Monday, a sleeve and a notebook in the first week, a hoodie and a bottle later on, and a gift from the manager once the person has settled.

Different joiners need different programmes. A developer joining remotely has no desk to put a bottle on and needs delivery to a home address. An intern has a short tenure and a small budget. A returning parent needs something that fits a schedule nobody wants to push. A researcher arriving from abroad needs a city guide in their language and a kit that arrives before the start date rather than on it.
